Our world is full of extraordinary artists and we are privileged to shine a spotlight on them, here in our magazine. I’m especially excited to introduce you to this artist because she just so happens to be my cousin, Shirley Robinett. Shirley credits our Grandmother for her creativity, and it doesn’t surprise me. Our Grandmother, Ina McAvoy, inspired many artists in our family.
Shirley says she also draws inspiration from other artists, her daily journey, and the beauty of God’s creation.
Shirley’s art is inspired by Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar, “I have developed my own style of collage using cattle marker or watercolor painted paper or recycle paintings,” she says. “I cut them into pieces, and then assemble them into layered images, adding a variety of materials to adorn each image. Each brightly-colored whimsical image tells its own story and is often a reflection of my own personal struggles and triumphs.”
“You may find wild bird game feathers, grasses, wheat, pressed flowers, leaves, porcupine quills, horse hair, deer hair, coffee, tea, dirt, vintage sheet music, or other materials in my collages,” she adds.
