#VOTW: “Saigon (My Father’s Journey)” by Ben Phantom

Ben Phantom is a precious jewel borne from America’s melting pot. His father’s family escaped the Vietnam War, and his mother’s family escaped the Holocaust. As a Vietnamese Jewish American, Phantom uses his music to bridge cultural barriers, honor the past, and create a better future.

Ben meeting his Great Aunt for the first time during his recent trip to Vietnam with his father.

Ben returned to Vietnam, with his father, who had escaped the war 42 years earlier. The song and video are a beautiful, poignant tribute to Ben’s heritage.

Here’s what Ben wrote about the new song/video in a recent Facebook post: “The key to my future is in my past – a wise friend of mine says this often, and it was a big part of my motivation for this project. By understanding how war and forced immigration affected my father, and being with him as he reconnected and made peace with his past, I was able to better understand and accept myself.”

We congratulate Ben Phantom, as “Saigon” was just selected for the Montreal Independent Film Festival
